Renewable Energy

There is utility and governmental 'grade' renewable energy - and then there is de-centralized, local energy commons and renewable energy.

One can easily adapt solar on their own without subsidies.  First do solar hot water - not PV.  Then do stand alone small PV systems.  The coming EV vehicle batteries will provide a huge market for stand-alone PV systems.

Design & Operations

The operational footprint of a building far exceed that of initial construction.  Yet, once the design is completed it is difficult to change the eventual life cycle operating cost.  We need to design buildings more for usability and low  energy and operational costs over their lifetime.

We need to get beyond green and sustainable buildings. While these are wonderful endeavors and a refreshing new direction from other buildings, we can do so much more.  The european PassivHaus standard is one of these.  De-centralized energy commons is another.

WinSol3 is another example of what can be done in creating a no-operating cost, totally close-the-loop building

What good are greener buildings when...

  • our indoor air is more toxic?
  • 40%+ of global waste is from construction?
  • millions remain homeless and in poverty?

By following a redesign philosophy based on ancient, biomimetic and Deep Ecological principles, we can achieve new heights in building design and operations. Our building communities need to  'close the loop' (Cradle to Cradle approach) and creating a positive agenda of celebrating abundance in our built environment. Most designers are subject to the whims of their (rich) clients and supporters. They no longer have the freedom to design as if people live and work in buildings. Even product designers are more beholden to marketing forces and advertisers than to occupant function and aesthetics.
