In the last 20 or so years our science and technology has tremendous strides forward. Even our food supply has improved - to a point. In the overzealous drive for more profits and higher efficiencies and yield, the food industry has turned to chemical manipulation and additives. There is no such thing as healthy processed food!

Here are few examples of the chemistry behind our food supply.

COKE Ingredients: Carbonated Water, color (caramel, E150d), sweeteners (aspartame, Acesulfame K), Flavorings include caffeine, phosphoric acid, citric acid, preservative (E211, Sodium Benzoate).

Note: You may want to check the label at your local market, because over the years and in different areas, Diet Coke recipe uses various other flavorings (vanilla, lime, lemon, cherry), as well as many different artificial sweeteners.

First introduced in the USA in 1982, Diet Coke is the 4th most consumed drink in the world. Diet Coke signed an 8-year agreement with FIFA in 1998 and in 2006 extended it to 2022; according to CEO E. Neville Isdell: 'it affords us a new opportunity to bring people closer together through football (soccer).' Coca-Cola is the global beverage leader, generating over $15 billion in sales each year. Although Diet Coke has a strong association with sports and health, it is actually a worrying mixture of neurotoxins and potentially carcinogenic high intensity sweeteners.

Diet Coke (and many other sodas) contains benzoate which can be broken down into the listed carcinogen benzene in the presence of strong acids such as citric acid, found in this product.

Aspartame: Breaks down easily in heat and during storage to its neurotoxic components phenylaline, aspartic acid and menthyl alcohol. According to the FDA, aspartame is associated with headaches, dizziness, loss of balance, mood swings, nausea, memory loss, muscle weakness, blurred vision, fatigue, skin rashes, joint and musculoskeletal pain. More recent evidence shows that aspartame raises the risk of otherwise rare brain tumors known as lymphomas.

Acesulfame K: Causes cancer in animals. It is commonly blended with aspartame to cover its bitter taste, there are no studies showing of the combination is safe or whether it produces other toxic by-products.

Phosphoric acid: Contributes to tooth enamel, leaches calcium from bones.

Citric Acid: Harsh on tooth enamel. When mixed with potassium or sodium benzoate during storage and at raised temperatures can aid in the formation of carcinogenic benzene.

Caramel E150d (Sulphite ammonia): this sugar sometimes comes from GM maize. Ammonia is a toxic by all routes of exposure, and caramels make by an ammonia process may damage genes, slow growth, cause enlargement of intestines and kidneys, may destroy Vitamin B. This coloring has never been evaluated for its potential carcinogenicity or reproductive toxicity.

A hands-on project manager with over 30 years project management, training, and auditing experience. Expertise in operations and preventive maintenance engineering programs; standards and performance measurement programs, quality assurance and management systems, and customer satisfaction programs. On a personal note, Fred has designed and owner built three passive solar homes, his current one being totally off the grid and self-sufficient.
